Data Capture Overview

The world of data capture has become more complex in recent years. With more data than ever at their disposal, companies today have both the potential and the competitive imperative to increase the velocity of their supply chain, bolster the traceability and security of their goods, and grow their business on a global scale. The demand for comprehensive data capture solutions is clear. Fortunately, today's new tools and technologies are up to the task.

Advances like MEMS-based laser scanning, near-far area imaging, and the growing adoption of 2D bar code symbologies are enabling companies to drive more productivity from their existing systems than ever before. As data capture technologies become more powerful, they also become more transparent: end users can focus on tasks, not tools, and companies can focus on managing their business, instead of working around technology limitations.

Intermec's innovative data capture solutions have been helping companies drive more value from their supply chain for over 40 years. In 1974, Intermec developed Code 39, still one of the world's most widely used alphanumeric bar code symbologies. In 1981, we introduced the first CCD imager portable bar code scanner. In 1995, Intermec introduced the first handheld 2D data-matrix scanner. In 1999, Intermec introduced the first combination bar code and RFID scanner. In 2005, we brought the first Micro Electrical Mechanical System (MEMS)-based laser scanner to the market. And in 2006, Intermec delivered the breakthrough EX25 near-far area imaging engine – a technology that opens the door to whole new ways of managing data capture applications.

Today, Intermec continues to advance the industry and serve our customers through identifying and building the next generation of scanning tools and technologies.
